It’s vital that we acknowledge and support the people and organizations on the frontlines
It’s amazing how far we’ve come in our society regarding mental health in the short time I’ve been alive (40-plus years) . . . even in the last five years or so.
What once was a stigma and a reason to ridicule others has turned into understanding and open discussions in most circles.
The majority of us have had to fight a mental health battle in one form or another – be it little ones against slight depression and anxiety or larger ones like bipolar disorder, PTSD, and others.
Often the battle is a silent one that doesn’t show up until extreme circumstances (often tragic) occur. It’s a good day to remember to be kind recognize that even the simple acts of smiling and listening can be a lifesaver.
I’ve had some of my own mental and emotional health issues to deal with and have worked with an amazing and qualified counsellor Lana Wilson, who has helped me find the root-causes and learn to recognize where certain emotions and reactions were coming from.
I also still get different levels of seasonal depression, particularly in the fall and winter on dark, dreary days – like the day I’m writing this post. But, thanks to many resources and help available, I’ve learn to adapt and address these feelings with vitamins, exercise and mindfulness.
People who are battling and living with a variety of mental health and emotional health issue are being supported better by their friends, family and even co-workers everyday.
This is thanks to awareness campaigns like World Mental Health Day – in 2024, it’s Thursday, October 10 – and the work being down by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto, MindAID Muskoka, and more.
Consider donating to or even volunteering at any of those organizations (if you can). They have literally helped save lives.
For those looking for help in other regions or provinces, here is a list of resources broken down by province that you can find through the Canadian Government website.
It’s World Mental Health Day. Let’s remember to support those around us and be as kind as possible – you never know what someone is going through on the inside.
