Family Fun in the Sun on Lake Joe

Review of Rocky Crest Resort plus a few good tips when staying there for a few days

None of the reviews we do of any resorts or food & beverage establishments are sponsored.
And we only review places we really enjoyed – keeping it positive in this space!

One of our most cherished family traditions is taking the last week of summer break off to get a family fun trip done before the kids go back to school.

Where we go varies, but generally it’s some form of “staycation” in Ontario.

This year we were missing our teenager, who was working diligently as an overnight summer camp counsellor, but we picked up our daughter’s bestie (do people even say that anymore?) as a wonderful replacement.

With all that in mind, when making our plans earlier this year, it was determined we would go back to Rocky Crest Resort and enjoy a week of lounging on the dock by Lake Joseph, enjoying tasty beverages and nibblies, and all the other fun the property has to offer.

It’s the perfect place to be in the summer months if you have a family as the kids will spend hours upon hours on the water park style attractions: the Wibit and Iceberg. They do that, you tan and drink on the dock, and every so often you jump in the lake to cool off.

We had a rainy day, to which our girls headed to the activity room for large style checkers, drawing, giant connect four, and building their own apartment with checkers pieces and blocks.

They also enjoyed paddle boarding, the lake front pool, saline pool at the other side of the property, tennis courts, and toasting marshmallows at the nightly fire pits.

We enjoyed not having to entertain children for a week and getting some serious rest and relaxation time.

While we would also visit the resort as a couple, or with friends for a golf trip (that’s a plan I need to make), my recommendation is if you’re looking for a more romantic excursion to book one of the villas or cabins rather than a suite or room near the waterfront.

Our premium two-bedroom suite was wonderful for us as a family, but with so much activity and families around, I would want a place away for some one-on-one time with my partner.

Even better, visit midweek in the fall to enjoy the amazing palette of colours and plenty of lovey-dovey activities in the region while avoiding the family crowds.

If you are planning to visit with children, here are some tips to make your stay the most enjoyable it can be.

Bring your own fave snacks and beverages. While the food on the resort is great, especially at the golf clubhouse, it’s best to bring your favourite treats and beverages as it’s not guaranteed to be available nearby. Having a pantry and fridge stocked with things you love to eat will ensure your cravings are satisfied.

Try Chef Henri Bistro & Cafe in MacTier. At least one day while you’re at the resort, take the short drive into MacTier and get one of the delicious schnitzel dishes from this renowned restaurant. Oh, and don’t forget some homemade pastries to take out as well!

Pack for both summer and fall weather. Listen, the nights can get a little cooler and making sure you have a couple sweaters, pair of jeans, and track pants goes a long way to being comfortable while on vacation.

Enjoy the whole property. The waterfront is so, so much fun that you forget there are basketball courts, tennis courts, golf, and much more. It’s good to make a move and take a stroll around the whole property to try out all that’s offered – after all, it will only increase your entertainment opportunities.

I could go on, but this seems like the perfect place to stop and share some photos with you.

And if it wasn’t clear, we as a family definitely give this Clublink resort in Muskoka the stamp of approval!

Ciao for Now!
