The search is on for the next Spring Musical director
A lot of people either don’t know this – or maybe don’t remember – but a long time ago I made a brief appearance in the opening scenes of the annual Spring Musical in Huntsville.
That production was Guys & Dolls and it was so much fun to be just a small role alongside so many talented and passionate individuals. For informational purposes, I played an unaware boxer in training who accidentally got knocked out by a pedestrian.
I can still feel the hard stage as I went full into my role and landed on my back with a loud thump.
I still wear my faded Guys & Dolls t-shirt with pride though and like to tell people where it came from. Ahhhh, the memories.
But, I digress . . . the reason for that long intro is that the Huntsville Festival of the Arts and Rotary Club of Huntsville are getting the ball rolling on the 2025 Spring Musical and they’re looking for directors.
Anyone who has been a part of the stage production over the years knows this is a serious (but so much fun) endeavour and only experienced, creative directors should be applying for the volunteer role.
The HFA and Rotary want individuals who will bring their vision to life and create “theatrical magic.” The show is scheduled to take place at the Algonquin Theatre from April 4 to 13, 2025.
This will be the 17th year for the annual spring musical, and much like all previous editions, the opportunity for community members from throughout Muskoka and the surrounding areas to be part of the production is coming soon.
Much more than simply acting and entertaining audiences, those getting involved will make new friendships – or deepen existing ones – and really get to know their community better.
Earlier this year, School of Rock sold out its run of 7 shows and featured over 70 local performers and crew members of all ages.

Those interested in applying to be a directory should submit their materials by email to Dan Watson, executive director of the Huntsville Festival of Arts at: dan@huntsvillefestival.ca
Potential directors should submit a current resume highlighting relevant experience; a cover letter stating the musical title(s) in which you are interested along with a synopsis and links to videos if available; and names and numbers of two arts-related references, for example, theatre groups for which you have worked previously
Please provide more than one suggestion of a musical you would like to direct, as all musicals will not be available or appropriate for the Huntsville audience.
The application deadline is August 20, 2024 and only selected candidates will be invited for an interview. Full application details can be found at www.huntsvillefestival.ca
