Honouring Local Legends

Vote “yes” to town survey so commemorative naming can celebrate two amazing people

Not to start off too forlorn, but our communities in Huntsville and Muskoka as a whole have lost some amazing people in recent years.

Two of those people, my good friend Graham Pollington and all around great guy Mike Brown, did so much for so many over the years.

Though they are no longer on this physical plain, their legendary commitment to their sports, their family, their friends, and the community at large must never be forgotten.

To that point, there have been proposals put forth to the Town of Huntsville for each to be honoured posthumously by naming a space at their favourite sporting places after them.

And the Town, due to bureaucratic red tape, now has a public survey open online to vote “yes” or “no” to each of the proposals.

The survey runs now until June 11, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.

For Graham Pollington, the Huntsville Soccer Club with the support of their associated teams and members has asked that the McCulley-North Soccer Field be renamed “Pollington Field.”

Graham Pollington had an extraordinary community service record throughout the sports community in Huntsville, especially with the Huntsville Soccer Club for over a decade. He brought considerable benefit to individuals and families in the Town through his tireless volunteer efforts in coaching, mentoring, and fundraising.

He also worked to foster equality and reduce discrimination through advocacy for women’s soccer in Muskoka and by helping to keep soccer programs affordable and accessible for local families.

For Mike Brown, community members have asked that dressing room 8 in the Don Lough Arena at the Canada Summit Centre be renamed as “The Mike Brown Room.”

Mike Brown was born and raised in Huntsville and was an avid hockey player and supporter. He cared deeply about the community and worked to help ensure others would be able to experience the community in the same positive ways he did.

The Mike Brown Foundation helps to ensure that young people in Muskoka will have access to opportunities through sport that can help shape them into community-minded, welcoming, kind and generous people.
