Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team Aims for Historic World Cup Win

The world number 2 Canadian Women’s Rugby team is in the World Cup final today (Saturday, Sept. 27) against the hosts from England, who are ranked number 1.

It’s a significant accomplishment for these amazing ladies who play fast and strong while piling up points against some stiff competition.

For some reason, the Rugby Women’s World Cup wasn’t on my radar until I stumbled upon the quarterfinal match on TSN and subsequently had a pleasureful viewing experience as our Canadian team demolished the Australians 46-5.

With a team that is growing in stature and results, it’s well past time the sporting public took notice.

They subsequently took down the defending champions from New Zealand in the semi-finals, 34-19, and now are just a win away from their first ever World Cup title.

In the group stages, Canada beat Fiji 65-7, Wales 42-0, and Scotland 40-19. Considering they are ranked number-2 – the Canadians did what they were supposed to do.

The Canadians went to their only previous final in 2014 and were beaten by England.

The next two World Cups saw Canada eliminated in the group stage in 2017, then finish fourth in 2022 – where they lost to England in the semi-finals.

Much like Canada, the England side waltzed through the competition and every match enroute to the final.

What may be even more endearing to everyone outside of England as a reason to cheer for Canada – as a non-professional side, the women’s rugby team needed to do a fundraising campaign to get enough finances to support their training and travel.

They raised over $1 million as part of their Mission: Win Rugby World Cup fundraising drive. And now they’re in the final and a strong performance away from lifting the cup for the first time in history.

This has all the makings of a wonderful revenge story arc where the Canadian women win the World Cup over England on their home pitch to wash away the tough losses of the past.

Check out the Rugby Women’s World Cup final on TSN at 11 a.m. on September 27.
