There are plenty of good and bad things happening from all sides of this Canadian federal election.
The good things include interesting policies, respectful discourse, and some interesting viewpoints on why independents and moderates are leaning one way or the other.
The bad things include absolutely brainwashed morons being insulting to the “other side” for their political leanings, libelous and false information being spread about the two main candidates for Prime Minister, and an inability to admit that each side has some good ideas that could benefit Canada.
Let’s start with three policies each I like from the two main parties (Liberal and Conservative). To be clear, I’ve done my research and reading, I’m not writing a novel with every detail on all of these policies: go see them for yourselves.
Also, not arguing with anyone on whether or not these will be implemented in accordance to promises – I’m not holding my breath on anything any political party says during an election campaign.
Liberal Policies I like:
The dental care program that supports lower income households who don’t have insurance through work. Yes, it’s taxpayer dollar funded, but isn’t something that helps fellow Canadians a good thing?
The housing plan and eliminating GST for first-time homebuyers on homes under $1M. Just so we’re clear, I’m not arguing whether or not they will implement it, I’m talking just about the plan itself and I can support this plan. In fact, any party that gets into power should be implementing this plan (or at the very least, it’s affordable housing portion).
More funding for our military, in particular to strengthen our Arctic presence. It’s a no brainer. In fact, we know our defense commitment has not been met and this is a step in the right direction.
Conservative Policies I like:
Gun control. Look, I know way too many responsible gun owners to not be supportive of the Conservative policy on gun ownership. The Liberals went way too far in taking away good, honest people’s guns. The Conservatives want to bring the policy back to the middle.
Government Spending. The Conservative plan to find efficiencies within the ranks and cut funding for foreign aid I like. Much more than what appears to be maintaining the status quo elsewhere. I don’t like a completely eliminated CBC, but a realigned and better run public broadcast channel is my preference.
Immigration. They promise to be the most strict on immigration and those who fraudulently abuse our system. That I can support.
There are several other hot topics that I think both main parties have a good idea to deal with, so those are a matter of perspective. These six items were ones where I distinctly agreed more with one side or the other.
That being said, there are a few things that are really disturbing me in this election.
People are people very, very rude and ignorant online to each other (most of these cowards wouldn’t speak like this to each other face-to-face).
All the quality, respectful discussions end up being hijacked at some point by a fringe lunatic on the left or the right.
The practice of opposition supporters trolling a candidate they are against online with some very nasty conjecture – and sometimes outright lies.
That’s what I want to focus on now: the propaganda and outright libel being tossed around.
These are just a tiny tidbit of the falsehoods being said about Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
Carney is a pedophile. This literally was written in several public comments – including on a certain Conservative MP’s own Facebook page – that are not being dispute or condemned or removed by the Conservatives. This is ridiculous and nothing more than conspiracy theorist nonsense. There is no factual basis for this heinous accusation. It is actually libelous and spreading a lie like this about someone is despicable.
Poilievre is Trump light (or mini-Trump). Yeah, that’s not true. He has given no indication of this accusation at any point in time. He stood up against President Trump and was verbally attacked by the U.S. leader. Poilievre is a Canadian Conservative and a career politician, but he’s not a mini-Trump.
Carney or Poilievre will sell us out to the United States or to the Global Elites or to some unknown space aliens. Neither will do anything but be quality representatives of Canada. Either will try to make our nation better in the best way they know how and be loyal and proud Canadians. Stop trying to push B.S. conspiracy theories about either of these men, who are braver than you just by standing for office and putting up with the onslaught of attempted character assassinations.
Check out Policy over Propaganda for other fact checked items from both camps that took place a couple of weeks ago.
I have long written and spoken about the moderate majority needing to be louder than the fringe lunatics from either side of the political spectrum.
It’s more important than ever than we shut down the obvious lies and propaganda and focus on the policies that matter to us.
I always say, vote for who you want to vote for, but make it based on facts and policies, not innuendo, pandering, and propaganda.
If we do that, at least we know we voted in the best way we saw fit for ourselves and our families.
That’s it for me. Ciao for Now!
