March (Not So) Madness

Is there anything less exciting than a NCAA Tournament final eight of all one and two seeds (and a three-seed)?

March Madness? More like Spring Sadness? April Apathy?

Not one huge upset along the way. Nothing to see here. And definitely nothing to get excited about.

I was watching Friday night’s late games and hoping beyond hope for something, anything to get pumped about. I wanted to see number-6 Michigan beat number-1 Auburn and set up the rivalry match against Michigan State, but that wasn’t to be.

I know there were two one-score games, but I never really felt like the underdog was going to take it. a

The only hope we had was underrated number-10 seed Arkansas, who fell in overtime to number-3 seed Texas Tech on Thursday.

But, don’t get it twisted. Arkansas was a favourite of many to make a run even though they had a low ranking. This wasn’t a Northern Iowa or Fairleigh Dickenson or Gonzaga (before they were Gonzaga) run – this was a big school from a big conference with big time talent.

However, having everything (almost) go exactly to chalk is boring and definitely not “March Madness.”

Talk of a super league amongst the biggest and brightest conferences and programs will definitely gain steam with no mid-major programs making dents this year.

That is unsportsmanlike and will turn off most casual NCAA basketball fans – plus a few traditionally hardcore hoops supporters as well.

Look, a final four of all one-seeds or two-seeds (and a three-seed), or a mix of that dynamic, will definitely be interesting and worth watching. It’s just not the reason we’ve come to love the NCAA Tournament. And it’s definitely not worthy of the moniker “March Madness.”

Or maybe I’m just bitter because other than Duke to win it all, my bracket is busted.

That’s it for me! Ciao for Now!
