Doug Ford Secures Third Majority: Ontario Election Insights

Premier of Ontario Doug Ford has his third straight majority government. The Progressive Conservatives once again will rule Queen’s Park.

Congratulations on the unprecedented three peat: he is the first Premier of Ontario to win three straight majority governments since 1959.

Leslie Frost was the last Ontario politician to win three majority governments, in elections from 1951 to 1959.

Liberal Dalton McGuinty won three straight elections from 2003 to 2011, but the last one was a minority.

I was covering the Parry Sound-Muskoka riding on election night for the Huntsville Doppler; at least from the PCs perspective.

It was one of the closest races of the evening, with incumbent MPP Graydon Smith again facing a tough challenge from Matt Richter of the Green Party. At one point early in the poll reporting, Richter even had a tiny lead.

In Parry Sound-Muskoka, healthcare was and is the key issue. Smith was able to hang his hat on his pretty solid track record in that regard.

Though the riding I was in was close, the rest of the province wasn’t really with PC after PC taking race after race. At the camp I was covering, loud cheers were going up time and again with each victory.

Liberal Party leader Bonnie Crombie couldn’t even win her own seat in Mississauga East-Cooksville., as she was taken down by PC Sylvia Gaultieri.

The anti-conservative movement that has painted Ford and federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre akin to US President Donald Trump wasn’t enough to stop the landslide.

It was a failure by the other side to label Ford like Trump because he was the first Canadian political leader to stand up to the US president – and on the Fox news no less – after the initial threats of tariffs and annexing Canada.

Ford even mentioned standing up to Trump when speaking with reporters following the win.

So, the PCs have another majority government at a time when our province and our nation is fighting against tariffs from the United States, doesn’t have a competent federal government in place, is in a housing crisis, faces economic instability, and has a lack of healthcare services in most places.

Those are all very real, very serious issues that every single Ontario – and Canadians in general – are concerned about.

I don’t know which one the PCs should tackle first – or maybe it’s more of a blitzkrieg strategy – but they better start right away before it gets any worse.

Ford and the PCs insist they are the right people to lead the province for the next four years. They insist they’ll keep Ontario strong and move it forward in all aspects of life.

Now that the province has handed you a powerful majority, it’s time to make good on those promises.

I for one am hoping that you do.
