Kudos to Ford and May: Defending Canada’s Independence

Love them or hate them, they showed real leadership this week

Kudos to Ontario Premier Doug Ford and federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May! Kudos I say!

Ford and May showed a true Canadian grit, humour, and pride this week when addressing the half-serious threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding Canada becoming the “51st state.”

Whether it was Ford confronting a nonsensical Fox News host who claimed he was “offended” that Canada would not want to be annexed by the U.S. or flat out telling the media that Canada is “not for sale,” the Ontario Premier is standing up for what’s right.

However, he’s also going about it in an intelligent manner, and while saying “no” to becoming part of our neighbours to the south as one nation, Ford is also proposing some good business arrangements to be considered.

“I think if we work together, have an incredible trade deal, we could be the richest, wealthiest, [most] prosperous, safest jurisdiction anywhere in the world,” Ford said as he addressed Trump’s bravado.

Citing a “lack of leadership” in Ottawa, Ford says he took it upon himself because “someone has to stand up for Ontario. Someone has to stand up for Canada.”

I say good for him and we should all applaud the Premier for doing the right thing.

Of course, some ultra leftist extremists just can’t be happy or give praise to anyone in any conservative party.

There were plenty of “what is the world coming to” and other ridiculous statements mixed in back-handed compliments of Ford’s efforts. The worst was seeing people who rely on a lot of business from very conservative voters be outright insulting towards Ford, which is just disappointing.

How about you just be happy and proud of our country enough to forget party lines for one moment in time and give props where they’re due? How about we all be a little more positive in 2025 and try to embrace the good in everyone?

On that note, we must give major kudos to Green Party leader Elizabeth May, who took a very Canadian high road in response to Trump’s statements about the U.S. annexing Canada.

She had a great press conference overall, discussing the passing of Jimmy Carter, as well as explaining with a tiny bit of smugness that whenever “anyone looks around the world for the top 10 places to live, Canada is in the top half of the top 10 . . . the U.S.? Never.”

May jokingly referenced an age-old idea for British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington to form an independent Pacific Northwest nation. She also added in California to the mix for good measure.

“You think we want to be the 51st state? Nah. Maybe California would like to be the 11th province. How about it? California, Oregon, Washington,” asked May with a hint of sarcasm before getting very real, very fast.

“Have we got a deal for you; free health care. Universal free health care. No more one-year-olds who suddenly fall off the Medicaid list and their parents are in the news because they’re trying to do a GoFundMe to get their daughter to a doctor,” May told the media during a Parliament Hill press meeting.

May went on to say that Vermont and other northeast states have great relationships with their Canadian neighbours and may want to leave the US to join the Red and White Maple Leaf.

She added that the U.S. could “get rid of all these states that always vote democrat.”

In a powerful and heartfelt part of her press conference, May put it best when she said, “We love our country, it’s a country, a nation, and we do not aspire to be the 51st state. So, let’s not hear that anymore. If it was a joke, it was never funny and it ends now.”

That’s the speech that should have come from the Prime Minister, but he’s resigning amid a lot of Liberal Party drama that you can easily search up for yourself.

Both Ford and May have stepped up their leadership games this week, and we should all be applauding their efforts regardless of what part of the political spectrum you fall on.

That’s it’s for me! Ciao for now!
