Iconic Huntsville restaurant still does it right!
There were six of us having dinner a few weeks ago and everyone was happy with every dish that arrived at the table.
That’s a rare feat (especially with our foodie bunch). Even my kids can turn into little Gordon Ramsey’s if we don’t keep their egos in check.
But, sure enough, all the appetizers, all the mains, the beverages, and the desserts were delightful.
Though it was what we expected when booking the reservation, it had been a minute since our last visit to Tall Trees Restaurant Muskoka in Huntsville, Ontario. By that I mean, a couple of years . . . yeah, that long (#soccerfam LOL).
There is always a touch of nostalgia for our family when we visit Tall Trees as both my wife (front of house) and myself (first cook) worked there for several years under the previous owners.
Many of the faces have changed, even from a couple of years ago, but the great service, delicious food, and wonderful atmosphere remains.
But, the establishment’s owner-operators, chef Randy and Ashley Vowels have continued to advance their culinary arts and curated a fantastic menu. Ashley is an accomplished chef in her own right.
What we loved was seeing how the offerings had evolved over the years, and everything was so enticing – we’ve determined we’ll be going back sooner than later to try a few dishes we didn’t order. And a dessert that we did try.
Fun Fact: My beautiful wife Kandis and I had our wedding and reception at Tall Trees (as during while working there our relationship moved from friends to more than friends). Back then the restaurant was owned and operated by the amazing duo of Chef Randy Spencer and his wife Karen.

What We Ordered
(Sorry, not sorry but there aren’t photos of every dish
because we were too busy enjoying the evening)
Though the table as a whole ordered off the menu, I chose to go with one of the table d’hote daily specials and I was very happy I did.
Upgrading the appetizer to a confit duck poutine served over spaetzle, the meal started off right. Seriously, try this dish … melt in your mouth goodness.
In fact, the next time we go (likely just as a couple for a nice lunch), I’m going to suggest we get four appetizers to share in lieu of a main because I must have the confit duck poutine again and I’m looking forward to trying the Parisian flatbread and mussels.
Thankfully our table also ordered scallops (the homemade bacon jam just set it off), pork belly, and warm cocktail shrimp – allowing for a bit of a taste adventure.

My main was a mixed grill that I would 100 per cent order again if on the daily specials. Chicken and ribs, three types of flavours, three types of sides, some lovely edible garnish . . . boom!
Meanwhile Kandis hit up the prime rib and it was all it’s cracked up to be. Tall Trees has been known for their prime rib for decades and it never disappoints (yeah, even during the ownership changes – the prime rib is done the right way).
Other dishes at our table included the duck leg, steak, and back ribs. It was a bonafide bonanza of blissfully beautiful bounties (okay, I just wanted to “be” extra there).
It was an amazing dinner and if we stopped there, that would have been enough to garner a positive review.
However, my daughter and I share a very sweet tooth in common, so we had to order dessert (besides, dessert was included in my table d’hote meal).
We shared the deep fried buttertart and the apple pie cheesecake. Both were delectable. Though, I must admit that I’m not a huge apple pie fan: yeah, that’s right – give me a cannoli over apple pie every single time.
However, I will order two deep fried buttertarts next time and those will be just for me. The soft donut exterior soaking up the buttertart goodness on the inside . . . topped with both ice cream for that next level experience.
My mouth is watering just remembering how good it is . . . let’s leave it there and just say it’s a must visit for anyone living or visiting Muskoka (particularly Huntsville).
