Double Titles for Hornets

Huntsville PS wins both girls and boys volleyball leagues

It’s not always easy putting in the work when the results aren’t evident right away. But, the girls and boys volleyball teams from Huntsville Public saw that effort pay off in a big way.

After five months of recess and after school practices to hone their skills, the Huntsville Hornets swept the North Muskoka Sports League championships just before March Break.

The boys went undefeated, while the girls suffered a lone regular season defeat and finished second. But that loss proved to be vital as they found their inspiration to work even harder and make their playoff run.

In the finals, the Huntsville PS girls game back from a set down to win the best of three match against Riverside PS, while the boys also suffered a setback in set one before storming back to beat St. Mary’s for the title.

After tryouts in December attended by 75 students 26 of our students were selected to represent HPS as members of our school Volleyball teams in the Season.

The girls’ team was captained by Andi and featured Kaley, Sadie, Liv, Sierra, Brynn, Ayla, Olivia, Maelle, Lily, Taylor, Lochlann, Kaelyn, and Ava.

The boys’ team was captained by Alistair, and featured Josh, Daelen, Sawyer, Evan, Alistair, Carson, Ross, Myles, Asher, Ayden, and Lucas.

The teams were coached by Coaches Mme. Campbell, Mrs. Mcnaughton, and Mr. A.

A banner presentation and ceremony were held on March 22 at the school to celebrate the teams and their achievements. Included in the celebration were awards presented to players as voted on by their peers.

Maelle Knappett and Carson Dykstra won the Team Spirit Award for the player who demonstrates the extraordinary team spirit through enthusiasm, vocal support and celebration, keeping team morale high.

Daelen Kay and Sadie Brown won the Player Development Award for the player who has shown outstanding development of volleyball skills and knowledge throughout the season.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards went to Andi Stevenson and Alistair McMannon.

As well, volunteer HPS referee Doug Oliver was thanked for his efforts, welcomed as an honorary member of the teams, and presented a team jersey.
